Final Fantasy Type-0 Playable Demo

Final Fantasy Type-0

Big news for those waiting for Final Fantasy Type-0, Square Enix has just released a playable demo in Japan! If you don't have a Japanese PSP (or at least haven't set your up to be one) you can download it here, note you will need about 340MB worth of free space for it on your PSP.

Square Enix didn't just include a standard demo though, this is a hard version of the demo. The enemies are a bit tougher than your party. To make up for it they have hidden a Summer Outfit for each of the included party members hidden within the demo, these outfits will carry over to the full Japanese release. No word yet on if they will carry over to the US release as well or not though, we may have to wait for our own demo. No Us release date has been announced either.

Persona 2 - Innocent Sin

Persona 2 - Innocent Sin

Atlus missed this game years ago and released the second game, Person 2: Eternal Punishment instead. Innocent Sin was released in Japan in 1999 as Persona 2: Tsumi. The two games play about the same with innocent sin having a few minor updates for this new release. The story line also should fill in some of the details that where lost in Eternal Punishment. Atlus has slated it for a September 21st release here in the US and is including a sound track CD when you Preorder, Persona included the CD regardless if you preorder of not though.

Also a few games to watch for that will likely never make it out state side but should. Puella Magi Madoka Magica Portable is an dungeon crawler RPG based on the series of the same name, I'm not sure how this series will translate into a dungeon crawler but we'll see, hopefully they can create a better one than standard dungeon crawlers... The second game to mention is what we in the states need, an action game with a real storyline. You know that has real depth rather than "Get to point A and kill everything on the way, oh we may stop you for a brief conversation about the weather on the way." Terror of the Stratus is a sci-fi Action RPG based in Tokyo during the year 2055, Aliens are invading from a moon base, you lead a secret team to remove the Aliens from the moon base, I know thats low a low level discription so if you want more you can see the trailer here.

Fate/Extra Coming to PSP

Fate/Extra

Aksys Games has decided to release Fate/Extra in the US, so far the only release date information available is from amazon.com for October 18th of this year! The game is set long after the original Fate/Stay Night after the year 2032, within a virtual system called Serial Phantasm a virtual version of the Holy Grail War is held. Like the actual tournament this one includes 128 participants which battle it out until only one remains. That one receives the Holy Grail and any one wish they request.

Originally released in July 2010 in Japan, Fate/Extra has been created by Image Ipoch with the designs of the Type-Moon team and music composed by Shinji Hosoe. The original came with a Saber figma figure from Max Factory but I don't think we'll be that lucky here in the US :(

Hyperdimension Neptunia Mk-2

Hyperdimension Naptunia Mk-2

With the ability to Heal Duuring Battle... by yourself!... Hyperdimenion Neptunia is coming out next week in Japan! No US release date has been set but if the fans ask it should be release once they localize it. The story sounds about the same as the previous one with more jokes and industry bashing. they have brought in more mascot characters in this time around as well.

From what I can tell the team is older now and they are still battling Arfoire, the lands have changed and the environments have seen some massive updates. The battle system has also been upgrade a bit allowing you to bring up to 8 characters into a fight at a time, hopefully you don't need to pay extra to bring them in this time though... Another interesting feature which I'm not sure what to think about yet is a "Social System" similar to Twitter I guess in which the in game characters communication with each other, hopefully it is more interactive that the Radio in the first game though, I just started ignoring it with the annoying intro jingle. The limited edition of the game is being release with 2 minifigures of the main characters. Unfortunately again no release date has been set here in the US, but it hasn't been released in Japan yet either we should know more in the coming months!

Atelier Totori

Atelier Totori

NISAmerica has annouced that is will be releasing Atelier Totori in the US this Fall for the PS#, although it's the 12th game in the Atelier series it is only the 6th release here in the States. To be release on June 24th in Japan, this game continues in Arland but appears to be set before Atelier Rorona as she has been younger in the preview illustrations. I assume the gameplay won't change too much from the last game (which isn't a bad thing) and with excellent art from Mel Kishida it should look every bit as good. No solid release date has been announced yet.

Also Atlus has announced they are releasing Persona 2: Innocent Sin this fall as well, for anyone who played through Persona 2: Eternal Punishment and went "what?" at the story line Innocent Sin was the first Persona 2 game and clears up any issues, although the complex story line of both games stood very well by themselves. Atlus is upgrading all of the art for this release as well as the sound to their current standards although the oringal music will be available. They also have released the special packaging for Catherine, mustly useless stuff, boxers (which have been packaged with games before remember Crash Bandicoot?) a pillow case and such.

Disgaea 4

Disgaea 4

Announced last year Disgaea 4 has finally gotten a release date and a pre-reserve date annoucement? NISAmerica is really starting the jump the gun but hopefully for good reason. Released in Jpana last in Febuary Disgaea 4 like its predecessors takes place in the netherworld and again pushes Laharl out of the position of main charater. The story follows Valvatorez as he attempts to raise his position from a warden of the Netherwold Prinny prison and overthrow the corrupt government of the Netherworld... because his netherworld government would be less corrupt?

NISAmerica is releasing three different version of the game, a basic version, one which comes with a Fuuka figure and a special one which comes with figures for most of the main characters (but no Laharl in this set either... sorry Laharl). So far the release date is for September 2011 and the preorder begins in July, you can order your own copy at NISAmerica.com

Grand Knights History

Grand Knights History

Sorry for the double post today but anytime Vanillawear annouces a new game coming stateside I have to bring it up. Atlus has decided to bring Vanillawear's latest game Grand Knight History to the US on May 22nd to the PSP!

Grand Knights History combines a few of their previous game concepts. Set in the land of Rystia, three kingdoms are battling for surpremacy. You control a small band of warriors which set off in this war for adventure. Battles are turn based with a side perspective sort of a combination of Odin's Sphere and GrimGrimore with a more turn by turn action system rather the RTS or Action. They also plan to make the game massively multiplayer having all players playing in the same field simultaniously in one giant war. Not sure how that would work with the setup they've described but if it works it should be very fun.

Also, Sega annouced is that Valkyria Chornicles III will be released on the PSP sometime this year, no solid date was given, but the game was released in Japan on Jan 11th and it is excellent!

Otomedius Excellent

Otomedius Excellent

Odd ball Gradius style game fans rejoice, it has been announced that Konami is bringing Otomedius Excellent to the US this summer in an actual physical box! Currently Amazon.com has it slated for July 28th at 39.99, nothing special appears to be coming with it. This odd game is basically a gradius remake that sort of pokes fun at a few of Konami's best games including characters with names relating to other games, such as the Belmont family of Castlevania. The art and designs arn't top quality but any scrolling shooter release in a physical form, with any amount of character is normally a win.

Hopefully more Japanese games start coming over, the trend is getting better. Nintendo however decided not to make the 3DS region free or at least include the Japanese and US regions together like BluRay. I assume this may have more to do with language differences and the technical nature of the two being on one device than hacking, as most seem to believe. Luckily most excellent Japanese games come out for Sony products and not Nintendo products.

A few other tidbits the newest Record of the Agarest War Zero is being released by Aksys Games in May, this comes with a few limited editions items. Aksys has also declared BlazBlue Continuum Shift II will be released on both the PSP and 3DS, fighting games on handhelds have never been as good (lack of good multiplayer) and I'm not sure how BlazBlue would work on a 3D screen unless they are simply skipping that. At least Street Fighter IV is semi 3D when the camera rotates around during special moves, but just having the 2D sprites in the forground isn't really worth any extra cash.

Black Rock Shooter

Black Rock Shooter

And it's finally a game! The animation based on a character inspired by a music generation program, Black Rock Shooter is being made into an Action-RPG by the developer Image Epoch. Currently only a Japanese release date of August 25th has been announced but NIS America is working on the rights to release it stateside. Not much about the final game is known yet, other than the creative teams behind it and that the game is set in a different universe from that of the OVA. I'm just hoping that they release the special edition here as well, NIS is good about that, but they normally take out everything but the art book.

As it has been awhile since I made an update, more information regarding Final Fantasy Type-0 has been released, another Action-RPG from SquareEnix. So far it sounds like they are taking a stab at the magic school students facing off against monsters (from Persona or Atelier Iris ilk) using magic cards (like MtG or Yu-gi-Oh...). Hopefully the combination comes out right when it's release later this year. No US release date has been set yet and it will be the first game coming out on two UMD discs, I was wondering when that would happen noting many PS1 and PS2 games hit multiple discs with the same game data requirements.

Lastly in case you hadn't noticed the Nintendo 3DS can be played in most stores now! If you haven't preordered it your out of luck... but it is really cool looking. It still needs some better games before its worth tossing my DS in for it though.

Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky

Legend of Heroes - Trails of the Sky

The next game from Xseed Games through their license with Falcom will be the Trails of the Sky series! Originally released in Japan in 2004 this is a 3 game series, I can't seem to find any information on whether this is a 3 game compilation or if the three will be released seperately, the last legend of heroes trilogy to be released by Namco Bandai where released seperately.

The game involves a rather typical JRPG story. It involves a girl named Estelle Bright and her adopted brother Joshua as they adventure through and eventually save the kingdom of Liberl. Which hopefully isn't too liberal... The game plays out as a combination of traditional RPG elements mixed with Strategy RPG tactics which is a welcome change. Most Strategy RPGs completely leave out the adventuring and development aspects of the story. The trade off is that it seems as though both aspects are slightly watered down, yet deep enough to allow a good amount of strategy during battles.

Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky will be released on March 29th with a special edition package.

Arcana Hearts 3

Arcana Hearts 3

Aksys Games is bringing the 3rd installment of the Arcana Hearts series, not the best fighter out there (Marvel vs. Capcom 3 just came out) but any time an odd Japanese title comes out that presents any real gameplay I get excited. Arcana Hearts was a great fighter with a good gameplay system, it was also very difficult to get through. The flip side is that although the cover art and promotional art was greate the in game art left a bit to be desired. Hopefully this release will be that much better though!

The big fighter to come out this month is of course Marvel vs. Capcom 3, this is a great game with a ton of characters to choose from. The best parts I have found about any of the Capcom fighters is simply that picking up a different character actually, and dramatically, changes the gameplay and strategy in your matches as well as who your opponent is playing as. The upgraded visuals are a plus as well. The best feature of this game though are the fighters, representing Capcom and Marvel they are sort of displaying an East vs. West battle and the creaters did a good job of creating a reason for the madness within the story line. Of course as all fighters go the story is rather sort and weak for my tastes.

Todays updates can't stop without mentioning the release yesterday of the new Halo: Reach multiplayer map pack. Although I have yet to download this pack (justifying the cost after the last disappointing pack is tough) the reviews are saying that this was a very good pack and the trailer was excellent.

Tales of Graces F

Tales of Graces F

Tales of Graces F has been confirmed for release in the US! The Tales games have always been great but we seem to miss out on so many of them it is good to see that Namco Bandai is bringing this one over and sooner. Tales of Graces was originally released on the Wii and then later as Tales of Graces F on the PS3 on December 12th last year in Japan. Overall it keeps to the solid formula they have built for it over the years, keeping their Action-RPG battle system and deep story telling.

Much like in Tales of the Abyss, this time around the main character (Asbel) is the Son of a powerful Lord, after losing a friend and joining the knight academy he takes his fathers place as Lord of one of three kingdoms and sets out on the adventure. From this point you are essentially attempting to rule over the two other kingdoms while under the impression that you are protecting those you love.

Unfortunatly Namco Bandai decided to replace Kosuke Fujishima with Mutsumi Inomata again, Mutsumi Inomata did the character designs for many of the early Tales games (such as Tales of Destiny) and more recently ones that never made to release here in the US (although they need to release all of them :) ). The last game to feature Mutsumi Inomata as character designer in the US was Tales of Destiny 2 back on the PS1. Personally I like Kosuke Fujishima's work much more but it wont really have a large impact on the overall game.

Now we are simply waiting for the release date annoucement in order to reserve our copies.

Ar Tonelico Qoga

Ar Tonelico Qoga

NIS America likes to keep it's release dates pretty much to itself until just more than a month before launch, which always makes waiting for games you know are coming more difficult. Finaly though after nearly 2 years of waiting they have annouced that Ar Tonelico Qoga (3): Knell of Ar Ciel is coming stateside on March 15th. They are releasing a standard version which includes an art book and a limited version on nisamerica.com whichs includes a calendar.

For those who are not familiar with Ar Tonelico, the game has one of the best battle systems of any RPG, it is music based and timing based. This will be the series first (and it sounds like last) trip into 3D, which may introduce a few new elements into the battle system seperating itself from the previous 2 games a little. Each game so far has been about the a select group of people fighting the forces left in place by an ancient civilization and using them to their own means, ultimately these forces are always to much for the people to handle, thus your party eventually goes to destroy them and bring peace to the world.

What sets this apart from other games of this type is the music which has always been very melodic and harmoneous, clearly presenting the overall tone for the game and sounding wonderful as you play through it. This music becomes your best weapon in your fights and developing the Reyvateil one of the most important tasks the game has to offer.

A few other notes, SquareEnix has officially announced that The 3rd Birthday will be released on March 29th which will bring Aya Brea's third quest to the table in a more gun toting experience. And Sony has annouced their Next Generation Portable which sports a 5inch screen and near PS3 capabilities but (although some say it is smaller than the PSP-3000) it is slightly larger making it (although thinner) far to large to be a pocket system which is very important to people who carry it wherever they go... like me, no games have been announced yet or a release date.

Devil Survivor Overclocked

Devil Survivor Overclocked

With the release date now announced for the Nintendo 3DS (which is March 27th if you missed it) the game lineup is just starting to be built. Although they have annouced quite a few games so far the only game that stood out to me in the launch lineup is Dead or Alive Dimensions, fighting alone on a little system or even online for that matter has never really been too interesting though. You need the interaction of the person next to you to bring the fight to your living room.

Nintendo is bringing back two excellent titles for the release lineup with Zelda Ocarina of Time and Starfox 64, yet as these have been released on the N64, I'm not sure I would by the 3DS for them, having already defeated them. Good thing Atlus is here, though they have yet to officially announce a release date (Amazon states 6/28), they are rereleasing Devil Survivor with the extension Overclocked. If you have missed out on the intial release in 2009 this is a great Strategy RPG which is not to be missed.

The game is basically about a group of High Schoolers that are suddenly forced to fight their way out of the city after it is overrun by demons, so far the only improvements are updated visuals and an extra quest to grind through, although the 3DS is cool I'm still unsure of spending $250 for a system, for a game, which has been previously released, bring something new to the table and possibly we can talk.

Final Fantasy XIII-2

Final Fantasy XIII-2

SquareEnix has officially announced Final Fantasy XIII-2, which will be coming out by the end of the year, at least in Japan. All that is known about XIII-2 at this point is that Lightning is again in the game, nothing however is known about the story. From the trailer it looks as though they are changing up the outfits much like in Final Fantasy X-2, with a very similar style as well. If it is anything like XIII, X or X-2 then this should be a great game when it comes out.

On other notes Prinny 2 is as difficult as one would imagine (if not occassionally more so) and LittleBigPlanet 2 has been release. Unfortunately I have not played LBP2 yet and will not likely get to play it for sometime... looks like great fun though with more styles of play and much more to work with in the level designer mode. Soon we will never go a day without a new level to play in LittleBigPlanet along with alternate games and worlds created with the tools provided.

NIS America is still working hard as of late prepairing the Ar Tonelico 3 website, they have yet to announce the release date for this game but I assume it will be either in March or April as they are launching a site in the next few days they have alos introduced Free Shipping at their store, about time! Lastly Dragon Quest VI is finally being released here in the states on 2/15 if you have played it before (either imported or via rom) you know that this is a must for any fan of the Dragon Quest games. Now they just neeed to rerelease Dragon Quest 7 and 8 to get rid of the last two odd "Dragon Warrior" titles on my shelf.

Okamiden and Hyperdeminsion Neptunia

Okamiden

With the Consumer Electronics Show 2011 (CES) started in Las Vegas we have a lot of information coming out on future games, games in 3D and the Kinect. Hopefuly Nintendo, having returned to the show after many years, will announce more regarding the 3DS although most seem to assume they won't say anything until their show on January 19th. I also personally hope that they stop trying to move handheld gaming onto phones with touch screens, I need buttons and cheaper prices, I also like to have boxes on my shelves rather than downloaded data (which can be lost more easily that boxes on shelves).

Okamiden was highlighted on the first day by Capcom, being released on March 15th it may be too close to the 3DS release to draw much attention though. The game looks great especially for a DS game and the action draws from the original Okami game, although quite a bit has changed this time around. The biggest draw to this game is the art, music and complexity of the story and general appeal of the game, just like in Okami your weapon is a brush which is controlled, appropriotely, by the stylus which should add a new level of control even over the Wii version of Okami.

NIS America also release more information on Hyperdeminsion Neptunia, it appears the game will be very similar to Trinity Universe with witty dialog and long dungeon crawling. The art is great but if it is the same it may be lacking in overall length and story depth. This seems to be plaging a lot of Nippon Ichi games as of recently (Trinity Universe, Disgaea Infinite, Last Rebellion, with a small hint of Atelier Rorona come to mind). Overall I'm still waiting on more info regarding the expected release of Ar Tonelico 3 in the 1st or 2nd quarter.

Prinny 2!

Prinny 2: Dawn of Operation Panties Dood!

This is a bit late but Prinny 2 is coming out next week on January 11th. I'm not sure how many other people defeated or even played the first but this sequel is made in the same vein as the original. Which means that it will be very challenging! The story is just as odd as the last time only trading the ultimate dessert for panties and of course the Prinnies are blamed for it, and so they must retreive the panties at all costs (the costs being roughly 1,000 Prinny lives! or as I learned last time a rather untimely "Game Over" with no continues at the end of he game).

This time around rather than improving graphics Nippon Ichi decided to add a lot of content making the game about twice as long (according to sources). If that wasn't enough, rather than rewarding you with an even harder version this time around they created Asagi Wars to play through. Asagi Wars apears to be the same game with a different main characters so I will assume that it will be more difficult as well. Although winning the game and being rewarded with a near impossible feat last time didn't really make me want to play through it again (even standard mode was hard!).

The bad news is that this time they aren't offering any collectors edition other than a pin which is OK, as last time it was only a soundtrack and it appears as though the music is the same. The Asagi pin is only available through NIS America's online store which charges international shipping from their factory which adds about $5-10 on anything you purchase :(
